How Spravato® Is Different (The Science)

Traditional antidepressants (SSRIs like Prozac or Zoloft) work by increasing levels of serotonin, a chemical messenger in the brain. While effective for many, they don’t work for everyone, and they can take 4 to 6 weeks to show results.

Spravato® works differently. It targets the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor and increases levels of glutamate, the most abundant chemical messenger in the brain. This unique mechanism helps restore synaptic connections between brain cells—essentially “repairing” the neural pathways that have been damaged by chronic depression. Because of this direct action, many patients experience a reduction in depressive symptoms within 24 hours of their first treatment.

What to Expect During Treatment

We have designed the Spravato® experience at Zoe Psychiatry to be safe, comfortable, and relaxing.

1. Self-Administration: You will administer the nasal spray yourself under the supervision of our medical team in our private, comfortable treatment suite.
2. Observation Period: Because Spravato® can cause temporary dissociation or sedation, you will relax in our clinic for two hours after administration. During this time, our staff monitors your blood pressure and ensures you are comfortable.
3. Heading Home: You cannot drive for the rest of the day, so you will need a friend or family member to drive you home. Most patients return to their normal routine the next morning after a restful sleep.

The typical course of treatment consists of two sessions per week for the first month, tapering down as your symptoms improve.
